Nålbinding.

Why I like nålbinding more than knitting:

Every time I've tried to knit, I've ended up spending hours upon hours to produce small, useless, and flaw-filled scraps of textile; or it was so disastrous that I simply gave up within the first five rows.

I taught myself how to nålbind yesterday, and in the course of my very first try, I produced something real and useful--a pair of socks.

Now the astute readers of my blog will notice that they don't exactly match. I'm not overly concerned on this point because it was a learning experience, and I'm just happy that they're the same size.

I think if I used something sturdy, like thick hemp cord, I could actually make shoes.

  1. How do you say that word and what sort of tools do you use? I actually love that they're not the same colors. :)

  3. I pronounce it nail-, but I don't actually know. Other popular spellings include nal-, naal- and nale-. It uses yarn and a blunt needle with a big eye.

I'd like to link you to the tutorial I used, but for some reason my computer is refusing to paste anything, no matter which method of pasting I use. So do a seasrch for "nalbinding tutorial" and it's the top one in Mel's Medieval Ramblings. I never did quite understand how I was supposed to go up through two holes at the same time, so my technique was probably a little different (it was more like doing a blanket stitch). I want to see if I can find/figure out a technique that makes bulkier stitches.
