Here is something I wrote in 2004.
FOUND ILLUSIONS
Making decisions is hard. Knowing the
truth can be painful. But I’ve lived out there.
All the pain in the Truth is worth it. It’s
worth knowing. You don’t know how dark the cave
is until you’ve seen the sun. The sun is
blinding, and it hurts. At this point you’re faced
with a decision. Only the weak go
back. Only the weak go back to the soft
darkness of the cave.
Now that I’m aware of the illusion,
I cannot help but think that the ugly,
gray Truth will come out.
A lot of life has to do with understanding,
which is why a lot of life has to do with
illusions. People usually think they
understand, but they usually don’t actually
understand. Their alleged understanding,
therefore, is an illusion, and since they
think they know enough, they won’t try to further
their knowledge or understanding. They will
live under the illusion, thinking it
truth. Truth is unchanging, constant, eternal.
Hence the breakdowns people have when their Truth is disproved.
So, they say that destroying the illusion
will destroy the person. Some would argue,
on the other hand, that the discovery
of Truth is worth the heartbreak. What makes Truth
so desirable that people are willing
to give up their current happiness for it?
It’s the thought that the Truth (or perhaps simply
knowing the Truth, if the Truth is an
unhappy one) will cause greater happiness
and wisdom. That thought in itself could be an
illusion. But what if the Truth can only
cause pain? Is it still worth knowing? Or is
it better to remain in your illusions, safe?
Perhaps what I think is the newly-discovered
Truth, is in fact another illusion
I am giving myself. But the fact that
it is Pain causes me to believe it
is Truth.
I feel that respect for the truth is the basis of morality.
ReplyDeleteIt is violence to destroy someones illusion before they are ready. But probably violence is sometimes necessary.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it's just cruel, though.
But now maybe I wonder if its even possible to destroy someones illusion before they're ready. Maybe its incapable of being destroyed until a person is ready for it...
ReplyDeletethis all reminds me so much of Atlas (which i've almost completed).
ReplyDeletecan't decide if i'll recommend it or not.
